There are two types of people in this world. The ones who seek happiness and the ones who seek excellence. There is no right or wrong here — both are at peace when they are seeking what they like to seek.
The difference between a great person and a happy person is that the great person has overcome the forces of friction. This does not make it any easier to hold that position. On the contrary, it makes it even harder. The happy person, on the other hand, does not overcome friction and does not feel its force at all. The seeker of excellence knows he cannot hold against friction all the time, so he rests at his own will — without losing his form.
Eventually, the seeker of excellence becomes more powerful and often compels the seeker of happiness to face the forces of friction just to survive and stay happy.
There are many small things that break our momentum and act as friction.
I remember getting new AC remotes because I realized having my phone by my side — to control the AC — was making me distracted. I remember asking my mom not to keep snacks in the kitchen. I remember a few years ago, in my prime, I got dumbbells in my room to reduce the friction to zero.
The journey to excellence is filled with friction.
The seeker of excellence faces pain every day. He deliberately sets up friction against stagnation and downfall.
The seeker of happiness experiences joy every day.
